Acne is a disease caused by inflammation of the oil
glands of the skin. Pimples are produced as a
result of an obstruction of the follicle (whiteheads &
blackheads), then the infection of the sebum (oil)
causes inflammation and/or pus formation.
The exact cause of acne is unknown although it is
thought that the hormone androgen (male-like effect)
stimulates the production of oil. This oil is
thicker and it gets stuck in the opening of the
skin. Some people have more oil glands on
their face and are more sensitive to androgen
production.
Since acne is thought to be caused by hormonal
imbalances it is important to keep hormonal levels
in check by:
- Reducing stress
- Adapting sensible nutrition habits
- Getting Adequate sleep
To treat acne with skin care products we need to
address the texture of the skin (using alpha and
beta hydroxy acids), reduce the amount of oil
produced (using vitamin A or retinol) and control
inflammation (using benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, zinc
and tea tree oil).
Tips for treating Acne Skin:
- Use a good toner (glycolic, salicylic or
lactic) to clear skin of all oil so products can
penetrate the skin more effectively.
- Don't over moisturize if you have oily,
acneic skin. Your skin already produces enough
moisture so just use zinc SPF in the morning and
acne topicals at night. If your skin feels too
dry from your treatment products switch to a
more gentle, non-striping cleanser and use an
aloe vera moisturizer at night. You may consider
using an eye cream and spot treating your other
dry, flaky areas with moisturizer.
- Avoid the sun as it thickens the outer layer
of skin and causes oil to get trapped which
causes blemishes. This is why skin looks
noticeable worse after the summer.
- Facials and chemical peels performed at a
spa can help unclog pores, reduce the size of
pores, clear acne and help fade scaring.
- To conceal and calm acne use pressed mineral
makeup.

Wrinkles are a result of aging skin. Aging skin
happens as a result of factors we can control
(ultraviolet rays, environment, diet, lifestyle,
disease, medication) as well as genetic heredity and
hormones.
Effects of aging which lead to Wrinkled Skin:
- Dehydration
- Essential Fatty Acid Deficiency
- Loss of Collagen & Elastin
- Facial Muscle Atrophy
- Weak vascular system
- Skin Sensitivity
- Free Radical Formation
Tips for preventing and/or reversing Wrinkled skin:
- Apply broad spectrum UVA & UVB sun block with
antioxidants to all exposed areas of the face and
body. Wrinkles can show up on the neck, chest, hands
and arms as well as the face.
- Keep the skin moisturized from the inside-out by
eating a diet rich in essential fatty acids (salmon,
almonds, olive oil, flaxseed, avocado, etc.) or take
supplements like ultra purified fish oil capsules
and evening primrose.
- Facials and skin peels are great for preventing
and treating wrinkled skin on the face, neck and/or
body. Peels are similar to microdermabrasion except
can yield a deeper exfoliation and can be applied
around the eye area where microderm can't be done.
This is very helpful as most people notice the first
signs of skin wrinkling around the eye area.
- If your skin is non-sensitive or oily use a toner
after cleansing your face to ensure all dirt and oil
is removed from your skin and products can penetrate
more effectively.

Of all the skin conditions pigmentation problems are
the hardest to get satisfactory results. Melanin
production in our skin (brown pigment spots) is part
of our skin's barrier protection response to many
things in our everyday life:
- Hormonal changes (birth control, menopause,
pregnancy, fertility medication, adrenal stress)
-noticeable in the center region of the face.
- Dermal damage (UVA exposure, lack of antioxidants,
red-headed gene, sun beds, skin trauma, chemicals,
certain medication) - Noticeable on the outside area
of the face hairline and neck.
- Essential fatty acid deficiency (lack of EFA's in
diet or supplementation) - Noticeable as any odd
spot of pigmentation.
Tips for preventing and/or reducing pigmentation
skin:
- Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen every day to exposed areas.
Zinc and titanium are preferred to chemical
sunblocks because chemical SPF holds in heat which
is a major cause of pigmentation of the skin.
- Help sunscreen work better by using SPF with light
sensitive antioxidants A, C & E or apply extra
antioxidants underneath your sunscreen. If your diet is lacking antioxidants
take supplements.
- Use ingredients in skincare products which get
rid of dark spots; arbutin, bearberry, willow herb,
licorice extract, kojic acid, mulberry, niacinamide,
retinol, Vitamin C, alpha & beta hydroxy acids.
- To correct and/or reduce pigmentation plan
spending at least one year of treating your
pigmentation after eliminating all potential causes
such as birth control pills, hormone replacement,
photo-sensitizing medication, sunbed use, etc.
During the summer months have professional facial
treatments aimed at combating free radical damage
and include lactic acid skin peels. During the
winter, spring and fall months a more aggressive
treatment approach may be taken. Make sure your diet
is rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants or
consider taking supplements.

Sensitive skin is seen mainly in individuals
reporting an adverse reaction to responses to
cosmetics and the environment. Most commonly people
with sensitive skin describe themselves as
experiencing discomfort, stinging or burning when
they apply certain skincare products. Dry and/or
flaky skin and a tendency to flushing are associated
with having sensitive skin.
The causes of sensitive skin include reduced barrier
function (cells that maintain the skin have broken
down causing water to escape the skin and
ingredients to invade the skin), heightened neuro-sensory
function or increased immune responsiveness.
Tips for sensitive skin types:
- Sensitive skin is associated with having dry skin
and can be treated by avoidance of all soap or
detergents (foamy cleansers). If highly sensitized
then cleanse skin with filtered water and no soap.
There are many irritating ingredients in plain tap
water such as chlorine which can harm your already
irritated skin.
- Avoid or limit the use of waterproof cosmetics and
SPF's because the chemicals can increase skins
sensitivity.
- Sometimes limiting the number of products or
ingredients the skin is exposed to can limit the
possibility of sensitivity.
- Use a moisturizer containing natural lipids, ceramides, cholesterol, dimethicone and essential
fatty acids can increase the skins barrier.
- Professional skin peels at very low strengths are
good for building the skin barrier and getting rid
of dry flaky skin on sensitive type skins.
